Happy Birthday to Universal Studios Scream Queen of the '40s
She made her Universal studios debut in the Abbott and Costello film Hold That Ghost....but there were more "horrors" to come than surviving the antics of the comedy duo.
She was the first to recite the legend of the werewolf: "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf, when the wolf bane blooms, and the Autumn moon is bright."
Today we celebrate the birthday (August 17, 1918) of Evelyn Ankers.
She was born in Chile to British parents.
She was bilingual, and an excellent singer.
She really didn't want to become an actor but due to circumstances, she became the meal ticket for her family, and after a few roles of insignificance, she was cast in the before mentioned Abbott and Costello comedy. This led to the film which she would become best known for, '41 The Wolf Man.
Evelyn would then be cast in roles opposite the Frankenstein monster, Dracula, an Invisible Man, a Mad Ghoul, and be an ally with Sherlock Holmes against the Nazis....then a jewel thief brought to justice by Holmes.
She made a number of films opposite Lon Chaney.....and though they despised each other (a long story), you would never know it, as their on screen chemistry was so strong.... a true testament to their professionalism, and dedication to their craft.
Evelyn met fellow actor Richard Denning, and their marriage lasted until her death in 1985.
