I remember the song Jai ho from slumdog millionaire
It was such an emotional beautiful song that celebrated victory and triumphs over a life of adversity. I also really liked the movie Slumdog millionaire. It was harrowing but retained its message of hope against the odds. I was rooting for Jamal, latika, and salim ( except when salim raped latika and became a gangster for javed) I was rooting for all the children who were orphaned and exploited in the movie. I enjoy rooting for the underdog. It was a great film though some might criticize it as poverty porn. It was a British film and though I doubt children can go on top of trains without going to their deaths it made me really think of the lives of the underprivileged and exploited. It made me feel thankful that I had a family that was watching out for me. It brought out looking at social and economic class, religious creed ( Hindu Muslim riots) and being at the mercy of the world as a child having to fend for yourself. It also shows how some individuals really have no good choices and to be more empathetic. Like latika was with javed as his concubine. After being raped by salim and having no where else to go what choice did she have salim probably passed her on to javed and Jamal was about to get his head blown offf by salim so latika told Jamal to go. It also brings up nature vs nurture. Jamal always was good hearted while salim was very opportunistic even as a child. They both lost their mother and yes as children and young adolescents begged, stole petty theft, selling things, and giving fake tours at the Taj Mahal. Jamal became a call center worker while Salim became a gangster. Latika become property of Javed and abused by him. But what better did she know? Maman raised her to be a prostitute and what choice did she have? Be a sex slave for one man and be well provided for or work as a prostitute on the streets? And if she tried to run away she got her face cut as punishment. It was a hard film to watch but at least there was a happy ending for Jamal and latika. Salim only slightly redeems himself by letting latika go free knowing he would be killed so Jamal and latika. Can be together. He kills hiis crime boss and is gunned down by javeds men. Also he took easily to killing. He killed maman ( though mamam definitely deserved to be killed) so they could walk free after saving latika from maman. I also really hated that he purposely let latika’s hand go so she would be recaptured by maman while he and Jamal got away by train. What killed me the most is no one cared about these children who were blinded for begging rings or stopped to help children be safe. I also hated that the police did nothing while Hindu extremists were attacking the Muslim slum dwellers and killing and burning people and burning houses. Also the beginning of the film when Jamal was being tortured to get a confession of cheating for the answers really was hard to watch. Also who actually goes to the police and since when do police arrest and torture someone for cheating on a game show? Yeah I know it is fiction but still…
