On February 5th, "The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!" premiered
So what exactly was "The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!"?
As it turns out, it was a tagline used by Universal studios in order to make horror films more appealing to broader audiences.
Also to entice female audience members by focusing on the "strange love" aspect.
What was this film?
It set off the official start of Universal studios horror films in the sound era.....Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi.
While many believe that this film made its debut on Valentine's Day in 1931, it did not. Dracula’s premiere took place at Keith’s Theater in Portland, ME on February 5, 1931. Due to a contract agreement that studio head Carl Laemmle had with the Roxy Theater in New York City, the film opened there on February 12, and the nationwide premier was indeed on February 14, 1931.
95 years ago....and still watched and discussed today.
The restoration done by Universal studios several years ago is something to behold.
Watching the Blu-ray or the newer 4k transfer, is quite an experience and you feel like you are there with the characters.
