I love the phantom of the opera book and movie
But more recently I watched the 2004 movie musical romance drama. I feel there was moral lessons from the movie. One is to never judge a book by its cover and mistreat someone for being different. The phantom in the movie has a partial facial deformity which others cruelly mistreated and abused him. He was exploited and beaten as a freak show act with a band of gypsies and derided by the audience except madame Giry as a young girl who hid him in the underground of the opera house after we was wanted for killing the gypsy “master”. The cruelty of the world created a monster who killed without and kidnapped without thought who killed the stagehand Joseph buquet for getting too close and seeing him after he followed Eric.
You can’t force someone to love you. Eric or the opera ghost deceived Christine by pretending to be the angel of music sent by her father. He tutored her so she would get the lead role of soprano in think of me in Carlotta’s place. He lured Christine to his lair and kidnapped her in a trancelike state. He forbade her and punished her for seeing her love and childhood sweetheart raoul. He was in obsession with her and felt the need to possess her instead of letting make her own choices and be her own person. He forced Christine to choose him or kill Raul by strangling him with his lasso and sending him to his death. While he did all these terrible evil deeds, I felt bad for him because all he wanted was to be loved and belong somewhere. Christine’s kiss made him overcome with emotion because it was only the second time someone showed him any kindness and love. and in a moment of sacrifice let Christine and raoul go to be together while he escaped his lair.
If he didn’t have his facial deformity, he could have been someone great and distinguished because he was very talented genius. But the world never gave him a chance to be judged on his talents and abilities vs his appearance.
The phantom was obsessed with Christine while raoul truly loved her because raoul respected her wishes and was patient, gentle, and kind to her. Also in the book she was about 20 but in the movie I think she was 16 or 17 which really caused the ick factor with the phantoms age gap to her. In the movie he was probably 14 to 18 years older. In the book he was anywhere from 37 to 54 years old. Emmy rossum was cast as Christine and it said Paris opera 1870 I think from the beginning of the movie which was 1919. The tombstone said Christine was born in 1854. Ew… I don’t care if it was 1870 that was disgusting. Also Emmy rossum was 17 when she acted the part and kissing a 33 year old Gerald butler made me think why didn’t they cast an older actress? Also raoul was like early 20s to mid 20s in the book. And in the movie he seemed a couple years older but they were childhood friends and sweethearts.
It’s a movie that makes me think about life lessons and the importance again of treating people kindly instead of making the monster that people treat those who are different as in the first place.
