Happy 90th Anniversary Bride of Frankenstein
The Bride of Frankenstein celebrates its 90th anniversary on Sunday. The film premiered in U.S. theaters on April 20, 1935, about three and a half years after the release of Frankenstein on Nov. 21, 1931. The Bride of Frankenstein largely features Frankenstein’s Monster and the events leading up top the creation of his mate, while the character of The Bride doesn’t appear until the final scene of the film.
Many consider this the best sequel to any horror film.... others believe it the best sequel ever made.
James Whale had to be coaxed into making the film, after the success of his '31 Frankenstein, but once he agreed, he pulled out all the stops in making what he considered to be a black comedy fantasy, rather than a horror film. The film is filled with inside jokes and subtle innuendo.
Reprising their roles in Frankenstein, are Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein, and Boris Karloff, as the Monster. Valorie Hobson replaces Mae Clarke as Elizabeth.
Ernest Thesiger, a friend of Whale's is Dr. Septimus Pretorious, a disgraced professor booted out of the University, for an un-named discretion. Another close acquaintance was chosen for the title role, Elsa Lanchester. She also portrays author Mary Shelley in the opening prologue, that aid to bridge to events from Frankenstein, to this film, but it is her appearance as the Bride which has created an iconic figure,
not only in horror cinema, but pop culture.
The original cut ran nearly 90 minutes but edits were made, several forced by the censors, resulting in a 75 minute running time.
This is my favorite film and I could go on and on about it....but will stop.
