Why do streaming platforms charge for so many of the older movies that weren't even huge hits?

I decided I'd like to watch Housesitter with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn again, but it is only available if you pay to rent. I've had that happen a few times lately with movies that I don't suspect were exceedingly popular. I could pay it. I simply don't want to. So on to something else. Funny, I could always find something to watch as a kid, despite having only 3 channels and that was on a good day - sometimes just 2! Now, I've got 4,000 channels and nothing to watch. Lol. Go figure.

Late 80's/early 90's Rom-Coms always get top billing on platforms as "new" editions not to be missed, LOL.

Many are box office flops, with a cult following that somehow command a $7 rental or god forbid a purchase to own🤦‍♂ 💰💰

Ultimately, after scrolling all 26 letters of the alphabetized index; glazed eyed, a person is far too frazzled to make a selection.
We want our 4 channels back!

@SethGreene531 Yes, The Brat Pack movies from the 80s are always "not to be missed". Lol.

Laughs. Yes, I actually do give up often and just pick up a book.
@LadyBronte Agreed. The coming of age sagas🙄...Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire...🤦‍♂
