If goofs seem to happen in movie dialogues, do you believe they were intended?

In "The Middle" in one scene the mother claims that the father's belt was found somewhere, in another scene later on the father claims the belt to be the first thing he ever bought, when the son asked him what he did with his first salary. Could be a lie from any of the two, which is why I don't know which of these is a goof maybe.
