The large glass orb seen in the Wizard of Oz, and used by the Wicked Witch, was created by special effects wizard Kenneth Strickfaden, best known for his electrical machines seen in the many horror films like Frankenstein. He also did the electricity effect in the scene where the Wicked Witch reaches for the ruby slippers that Dorothy wears.

Luce Luz Potter, one of the Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz (1939), played the Martian "head" enclosed in glass in the film.
