Wizard of Oz & Invaders From Mars Connection

Fun facts:
The large glass orb seen in the Wizard of Oz, and used by the Wicked Witch, was created by special effects wizard Kenneth Strickfaden, best known for his electrical machines seen in the many horror films like Frankenstein. He also did the electricity effect in the scene where the Wicked Witch reaches for the ruby slippers that Dorothy wears.

The large glass orb was used in the '53 sci-fi thriller, Invaders From Mars. The orb held the head of the martian leader. Who was the martian leader? Luce Luz Potter, one of the Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz (1939), played the Martian "head" enclosed in glass in the film. For years she received letters from fans of the movie telling her how much she had scared them as kids. She also appeared in The Incredible Shrinking Man.

I love Invaders From Mars, it's a beautiful, haunting film. Thanks for the interesting insight.
@Richard65 my brother had nightmares after watching that movie of a flying saucer landing in the field behind our house.

@robingoodfellow the film itself has the eerie dreamlike tone of a child's nightmare, so I'm not surprised.

For my next "project" I'm going to look for Jim Thorpe in as many of the 72 movie appearances he made from 1931 to 1950 as I can. Most were uncredited.

@RenFur TVGuide.com lists 35 films.
Of note, White Heat starring James Cagney, She, King Kong, Barbary Coast, Road to Utopia, and Helltown w/John Wayne.

I used IMDb - - JT stood out in White Heat and another one I saw just the other night (damned if I can remember the film). Also, They Died With Their Boots On, Meet John Doe and Alibi Ike!
I didn't know this ! 😃
