Harry Cording: Golden Age Character Actor

Fans of movies from Hollywood's Golden Age, are likely to be familiar with his face, but not recall his name, but Harry Cording was everywhere.

Hector William "Harry" Cording (26 April 1891 – 1 September 1954) was an English-American actor, with a list of movie appearances that spanned 30 years and over 270 films.
With an imposing six-foot height, and stocky build, he was the perfect 'bad guy/thug' character.

The 2 roles for which he is best remembered are, as Bela Lugosi's henchman Thamal, in '34 The Black Cat, and as the villainous Capt of the Guards, Dickon Malbete, in '38 Adventures of Robin Hood.
Harry had already worked in 50 films before The Black Cat!

More notable appearances: Treasure Island, Mutiny On The Bounty, Captain Blood, A Christmas Carol, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tower of London, Destry Rides Again, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Son of Frankenstein, The Grapes of Wrath, The Invisible Man Returns, The Wolf Man, The Ghost of Frankenstein,The Mummy's Tomb, Road to Morocco, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, Unconquered, Red River, Samson and Delilah, Road to Bali, Titanic ('53).

Having appeared in a bit role in 20th Century-Fox's Adventures of Sherlock Holmes starring Basil Rathbone (1939), he went on to appear in supporting and bit parts in seven of the twelve Universal Studios Sherlock Holmes films in which Rathbone starred.

His final film appearance was '55 East of Eden.

So here is a tip of the cap to one of Hollywood's wonderful character actors, who we know his face when we see it....even if we can't recall his name.

@robingoodfellow That is a colorized still of Mr. Cording, as Thamal from The Black Cat.
@robingoodfellow Very interesting.
