Brother Sun Sister Moon (1973)

Roger Ebert called Franco Zeffirelli’s Brother Sun, Sister Moon way back in 1973 "a big, limp Valentine of a movie, filled with an excess of sweetness and light" and that Francis of Assisi was portrayed in it as the first flower child. Moreover, he pointed to Zeffirelli himself saying that he didn't think too much about his movie. One had to accept it as a simple experience. “You have to hang your brains outside by the door before you go into this film,” was what he noted the director's suggestion was at the time and Ebert certainly agreed that looked like as if Zeffirelli started with himself already. No, it's way too easy to phocuse on the movie like this. It's almost as a parable about so-called hippies, and an anti-war, anti-establishment film to boot too, but is that so very bad, especially in movie about St Francis? I read somewhere the more intelligent remark that any director who can't interpret through the lenses of his own time is not a very good director. All said and done, Zefferelli was a master. It may make his movies seem a bit dated today but that also is a sign of mastership as we see the life of Francis and also see life in the Vietnam War era. Moreover, wouldn't he be a hippie looking back and judging with our own sets of measurement? Yes, it's basically a movie to experience with the heart rather than the head but it's all about faith and spirituality after all
