On Earth As It Is In Heaven

When the movie The Mission came out in 1986 I was 16 years old and it somehow had one major effect on me. I've read somewhere that someone asked the question what the point was to the movie. Alright, it's heavy going in multiple ways, and my own advantage is that there were actually Jesuit missionaries in my family. They always sounded so intelligent and wordly in utterance, and beautiful in worldly appearance too. They were indeed shiny people. Well, the movie is about Spanish Jesuits trying to protect a remote South American tribe in danger of falling under the rule of pro-slavery Portugal. It tells a true enough story of missionaries who died defending Guarani Indians from Portuguese slavery in the South American jungle. Let that sink in first. Then listen to Morrecone's beautiful music. Personally, every time that I hear the music with seeing the sequence of the little boats on the river together I feel God's presence. It's as if I feel that God's Grace will come down for a second and last time in the same sort of glorious simplicity and grace as that 😢

One of the great and underappreciated movies of all time… and also a great story… true in some respects…
