Currently watching Mel Gibson's The Patriot

I've seen plenty of movies about the American civil war but I've never seen anything about the American revolution.
It's giving me Brave Heart vibes.
It's very cool how he's originally half American half Irish and he made such important movies about the history of both countries. He basically faught the British twice in both movies. Very interesting.

He based the hero on Francis Marion. But he conveniently left out that Marion had 100s of slaves. Probably took out the whole Freedom!!! thing.

The slaves actually sided with the British as they reckoned that gave them a better chance of freedom.@Justme22
@Justme22 Well that's disappointing. For real.

@Justme22 After the US victory, Washington asked the British for his 'property' back - the slaves who were now free and living in Canada.

@LizOwen Freedom, meant quite a different thing to the founding fathers.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Justme22 Indeed; liberty and freedom applied only to a chosen few. It was a cynical misappropriation of terminology to manipulate men to fight.

@Justme22 I believe the Native Americans would have also fared better under the British.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@chrisCA Compare the US with Canada. The native peoples were not treated well there either. Maybe better than in the US, but certainly not treated well.

@LizOwen I agree. Canada was not perfect.

@chrisCA Nowhere was- before or after colonisation.

This is an interesting clip.

@chrisCA William Johnson surely thought so.
