The Night Porter - 1974 - Liliana Cavani
Nazi kitsch as some say, i remember fondly going to a video rental place in the heart of the nearby city and renting it along with Pasolini's Salo and Godard's Hail Mary. If there's a deeper meaning to this film, imo it resides in how trauma works, this Nazi official who works at a hotel (in hiding) sees the lady who he had a screwy thing with during his 3rd Reich days there, his Nazi brethren want him to file her away so they can live peaceful civilian lives, but in a s&m kind of way this guy loves her.
It was weird revisiting it now, i had forgotten so much of it, just the cabaret song, and that he wants to be a church mouse. 🐁 The 2 leads Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling do have a chemistry and make it on the cusp of a good movie, and perhaps it's because they had worked with Visconti.
