Dread Jams for Spooky Season

Dread Jam is a favorite term of mine from one of the reviewers of Letterboxd, it fits for the kinds of movies i am drawn to, not just horror, but depressing too, the current movie Boy by Nagisa Oshima is a dread jam film in that it's depicting a life that royally sucks, this family is scheming their way into money the "dad" is abusive, the older child, the Boy of the title uses make believe to not lose his sanity, just think a 10 year old having to do that, and so on.

Why do i like this?

Well you know the answer to why horror is good, it's cathartic, and lets you experience things in a safe setting, well same goes with all sorts of things, and when it's a realistic story, the further reaches of human tragedy, of the ugliness of humanity, a good unsparing war movie gets the job done too. It's to be seen imo in the same way as horror movies, the other horrors of life, not just a limiting genre definition.

The bleaker a film is, the more appreciative i am of how things are here, for every "happy" movie i must watch about 20 dread jams.
