Deep thoughts

Last week I was watching a good documentary “Point and Shoot” about a American who’s name is Matthew Vandyke went on a journey to find himself by traveling thru the Arab world solo on a motorcycle, and ended up getting involved with rebels in the Libyan civil war. Watching it made me think again very deeply about my own desire to find what it is I want and what will make me truly happy in life. With my self deep in thought I decided to watch “The Thin Red Line” once again. Terrence Malik does a great job with adding so much thought in his movies in relation to psychology between Man and Nature. And although I’m not great at understanding the intricacies of his films they allow me to get lost in the visuals and thus further lost in my own thoughts about the path I’m trying to take. The feeling while watching these things are like a touch of depression and euphoria. Even with words it’s hard to describe it!
I would not recommend "finding yourself" by copying Mr. Vandyke.

But maybe you could start with listing some things:

1) subjects & activities you enjoyed
- as a kid, outside of school
- in K-12 school
- in college

2) things you do well
3) things for which you have a talent or aptitude (these can be disjoint from #2)

4) topics, subjects, activities which have ALWAYS fascinated you

5) things which you yearn to do...

It can help to do an alternative exercise and think about a perfect day/job/career/location/lifestyle...or aspects of those (e.g., "I want my work to include travel, and the purpose to be helping people <x>"; "I want to live where I can ski/where it doesn't snow/near national parks"; "I want to live somewhere more laid-back than driven by the clock".

If you think about these things, you might identify several areas, and you can then start to think about how they might combine.

Good luck on your journey. 😊
