My top 10 films

I don't watch films much anymore, so i'm just using this time to reflect back on things, film was thee interest that kept me going from 2005 to not too long ago, i collected them, the finest of the fine from such purveyors of excellence as The Criterion Collection etc

1. The Death of Maria Malibran - Werner Schroeter - an experimental thing on an opera singer and fate, a lyrical ode to the emotions, with a sound design i find incredibly sumptuous.

2. Fruit of Paradise - Vera Chytilova - a hallucinatory re-envisioning of the Garden of Eden tale

3. The Color of Pomegranates - Sergei Parajanov - a beautifully haunting evocation of an Armenian poet's life

4. Birds, Orphans and Fools - Juraj Jakubisko - this is like #2 but a re-imagining of Truffaut's Jules and Jim with a more tragic slavic tonality.

5. Walden - Jonas Mekas - a 6 part document of the 60's from the Pope of the Avant-garde, with little mini films embedded, i love for example Notes on a Circus which uses a couple songs from a fun band Jim Kweskin's Jug Band.

6. In a Year With 13 Moons - Rainer Werner Fassbinder - his most personal film, raw feelings abound especially in the slaughterhouse scene.

7. The Last of England - Derek Jarman - what ferocity this has, and the last 20 or so minutes will be with me till the day i die.

8. The Passion of Joan of Arc - Carl Dreyer - simply put the best silent film ever, from one of the greatest film directors ever.

9. Before Sunset - Richard Linklater - i love the first 2 in the trilogy, but this the 2nd reaches the pinnacle of all of it's charm and brilliance, the ending when he's in her home listening to music and she says you're going to miss your plane and it elegantly fades to black.

10. Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome - Kenneth Anger - a short film where these eccentrics dress up for Halloween, say no more right?
