How to turn my tv off automatically on amazon fire stick after inactivity?

I've been looking for s solution to this for a while.

EDIT We have a solution! Thanks all! answer below!

When I'm watching my firestick after hours of inactivity, it often goes to sleep mode, but my tv remains on, wasting power.

One morning, I was watching the stick before I had to leave, and I didn't realize I pressed the speak button instead of the power button. My TV was on all day.

And last night, I was watching the stick. It was late and I guess I drifted off after a phone call. My stick was in sleep mode, but when I woke up this morning, my Tv was still on.

If I'm watching regular TV/cable my tv shuts off automatically after hours of inactivity.

I haven't found a solution online, but I did see others had a similar issue.

Is this even a thing? Thanks in advance.

THANKS, EVERYONE!! I THINK WE HAVE A SOLUTION!

My tv goes into power-saving mode automatically after a certain amount of time of inactivity.

My tv and firestick were connected via an easy link option that's been preinstalled on my tv this whole time. so when my firestick went to sleep, it actually was doing the same thing my tv does after inactivity. I thought it was turning off before like my other tv but it wasn't. I will have to manually use a sleep timer as other people suggested or manually turn it off to power my stick and tv off.

There should be an option under your tv's settings.

It's commonly called "Eco mode", "Power saving" or something similar. I actually hate it for the opposite reason.

@HootyTheNightOwl Indeed. These disingenuously-named settings waste electricity! The equipment stays on but with the screen switched off.

The PC I am typing this on has a "Sleep" mode but unless I am intending to come back to it within a couple of hours I turn it off "completely" by its own control, then as I am not sure if it really is fully off; at the switched socket on the wall.

[Edited to correct the word "power" to "electricity" being wasted - power of course is the rate of use of energy w.r.t. time.]
@ArishMell The wasted electricity would work out at less than if the device was actually left with the screen lit up all night, though.

Surely you can agree that it's better in "sleep mode" than it would be left tuned to the news channel all night.

As for my suggestion, I made it in the belief that our poster was falling asleep as she was catching up on the latest episode of whatever show she is watching and the Fire stick is powering down at the end of it's cycle - but leaving the TV screen on... and that's not entering even "sleep mode". Though less than perfect, it's still prefereable if the TV would enter sleep mode in terms of the fact that it uses less electricity than it would while powered on - and it also extends the life of the appliance for our poster. She won't want to have to replace her TV any sooer than she has to.

@HootyTheNightOwl I took her post as meaning that too; but I don't and won't own complicated remotely-controlled TV sets and the like.

Yes, of course it's better set to "Sleep" mode than to any channel; but it's even better turned off completely. Similarly with charging anything _ I don't re-charge my 'phone etc. overnight, but at times when I can look at it now and then and switch the charger off when it's finished.

It is surprising how much electricity can be used over a year by small appliances on "Sleep" or "Stand-by", or left on charge for much longer than necessary. All has to be paid for!

The only things I leave on at night are the 'fridge, freezer (a small, under-worktop type), oven-clock, bedside clock/radio, the broadband modem and the central-heating/hot-water boiler controller. Even they probably amount to a few units over a year.
@ArishMell Some TV's have this funny thing where the appliance connected to it (the Fire stick, in the example given) will turn off, but the TV doesn't enter into a countdown mode - at the end of which, it goes into sleep mode, and, as such stays on all night, though it's not receiving any broadcasts. This was the impression that I got from our original post, so I gave instructions on how to get it into sleep mode rather than leaving it effectively turned on all night.

@HootyTheNightOwl Thanks. yes, I had a long phone conversation and before I was watching the stick so I was really tired and closed my eyes. By then it had already entered sleep mode. I woke up the next morning and my TV was still on in sleep mode. But I will do as others have suggested and check my TV settings.
@sweetiepoo You'll need a timer in this case. That's the only way to turn off the TV from sleep mode.

@HootyTheNightOwl Thanks so much! I looked at my TV settings and realized that the TV I was referring to was not actually turning off during inactivity but going into a power-saving mode. I have another TV that does actually completely shut off, but the TV in question was actually already connected via an easy link option with a CEC that someone else referred to, so I guess I will have to manually put the sleep timer on if I want to completely turn off. Thanks for all of your help!
