It is kind of like a mix of fantasy and science fiction. It's about a war between great houses and the personal journey of Paul Atreides. A young heir who has multiple prophecies associated with and carries a great burden.
It's based on the planet Arakis (known as Dune) which is home to Spice, which is the most valuable substance in the universe because it allows for space travel. The planet is also home to 300m long sandworms which each anything that moves on the surface.
I'm a fan of the book, which is also excellent.
