Is it wierd or brilliant to have comedy mixed in with horror/action in a movie?

Just saw Alien Resurrection tonight and every so often there would be a comedic part thrown in. One was when the elevator opened and the guy replied "Who were you expecting Santa Clause?"

It’s brilliant, especially for people who are not sold on pure horror movies. There’s a movie called
“Lair Of The White Worm” that is horror mixed with (dark) comedy.
