Is it wierd or brilliant to have comedy mixed in with horror/action in a movie?

Just saw Alien Resurrection tonight and every so often there would be a comedic part thrown in. One was when the elevator opened and the guy replied "Who were you expecting Santa Clause?"

It depends on how well it's done, it takes more skill than most directors/scriptwriters have to pull it off.
