Slightly more serious than my original answer... I think Game of Thrones did a lot to make this taboo acceptable (for lack of a better word) in edgy entertainment series or movies. Like a lot of things (including nudity) it can be gratuitous, just thrown in to titillate; or it can actually be relevant to the story/plot, even if it's difficult to watch.
