What percentage of an American Football game coverage is the ball actually in play?

About 3%? Am I being too generous?

15%-17%. The broadcast usually lasts 3 hours. However, they offer consolidated games after the fact that show every play and last 30 minutes. That would put the “in play” average in the neighborhood of 15% of the live broadcast.
@SW-User much more accurate answer than I was expecting anyone to give tbf, have a BA

@SW-User I cheat -- particularly when the Jets and Giants are on TV at the same time. I record the games and then just fast forward through the times outs, commercials, halftime reports, etc. On a good day I can watch both games at the same time, not miss a play, and be finished with both games within the 3-hour broadcast time.

I’ve done something similar where I’ll start watching the game about an hour after kickoff. By the time I’ve fast forwarded through commercials and halftime, I’ve caught up and saved myself an hour in the process. @ChipmunkErnie
