I Have Epilepsy

As some of you know, I have been through several tests since October 2017 up at Stanford Hospital to find out more information about my epileptic seizures.

On Wednesday, the 26th, I went to meet the doctor I originally met with in August. This is the first time I’ve seen him since that appointment. He walked us through the results of all the tests, one by one, which was very helpful in understanding just what happened and why those tests were taken.

What they found was a scar on the left side of the brain, also the seizures were initiated on that side. Cannot say for sure that the scar was the sole reason for the seizures, but it may have part to do with some of them.

We also discussed the options available. He is afraid of doing the laser surgery, as it can cause memory loss, which is one thing I am already dealing with, and he doesn’t want to make that any worse. He reached into his chest pocket and pulled out a chip, a little bit bigger than a quarter. The shape of it reminded me of a hearing aid. This is something they install with surgery, and can add wires if need be to place in certain areas that may trigger the seizures. The wires basically understand d the warnings and put a stop to them before the seizures actually start.

For the time being, he has change the doses of my two medications that I take specifically for my epilepsy. In the meantime, he will discuss my case at the Epilepsy Surgeons Conference and see if he can get some feed back from other surgeons who deal with others like me. We will meet again in four months, unless he calls me prior. He will assess how I am doing with the new medication doses, and we will again discuss the surgery.

After the forty years that I have been having seizures, my feelings are positive. I feel like I finally can beat this.
