I Am Autistic

The sad part about how autism is viewed by many people is that we're all either "high functioning" or "low functioning" or "mild" or "severe."

The reality is, a good majority of us are both high and low functioning.

Yes, autism is a spectrum, but we as PEOPLE are not on a specific spot on the spectrum; each of our autism traits are on different places on the spectrum.

I don't believe in saying "he/she/they have mild autism" because what people see on the outside is not always representative of the rest of the person's struggles.

I am autistic. That is all. I don't need to tell you "I'm high functioning" or "I'm low functioning" just to make it easier for you to "classify" me as something.

If you are an important part of my life and it is your BUSINESS, I will help you to understand what my struggles are and what I don't have as much trouble with, but I am not just high or low functioning.

Every. Trait. Is different.

Well put. I agree completely. The 'high' and 'low' functioning labels are often used as a measure of how easy or difficult Neurotypicals find us to deal with. It does not necessarily bear much relation to how much we struggle.
