Something I wish people would get

Having someone in your life doesn’t make the darkness and the mental illness go away.

Having someone in your life who cares about you is not going to magically make things better

Because to put that kinda weight on someone and that kinda stress on someone

Well it’s cruel and unkind don’t you think?

Just because someone has someone in their life it doesn’t magically make the darkness go away.

It doesn’t magically make the mental illness go away

And just because the person who struggles with the mental illness they are actually diagnosed with

Doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with the relationship

Just because the person who struggles with the mental illness is struggling doesn’t mean their person did or didn’t do something to cause it.

I can certainly relate to aspects of this. Years of treatment resistant clinical depression didn’t magically disappear when I met my husband. Wow was I wishing it would work that way. I think he was hoping it was gonna work that way.

My mom passed on something he’d said to her after yet another morning when I couldn’t even lift my head off the pillow, that he’d never seen anything like it, at a loss as to what to do. I know it weighed heavily on him. Which of course made me feel even worse, the whole situation a horrifically vicious cycle.

But these days, I tend to give more grace to people who don’t understand. Because even after all these years, there’s much about this mental illness that I don’t understand myself.

Really no one can control our emotions, that is on us but having that person that understands is helpful.
