Why can't people discuss civilly?

Why is it that so many threads here quickly degenerate into personal criticism with attacks on imagined intelligence levels, motivations, political beliefs, etc etc? Do people resort to this because they lack the stamina, language fluency or education to advance a discussion in more relevant ways - or are they "just assholes "? 😅 😂 🤥

I've wondered the same question in the past and I've come to conclusion that one needs to stand firm and just ignore or be more clever than the shouting person. Those that shout so even on here are the ones that indeed can't stand a discussion and not the people who defend their point of view. I don't need to convince anyone of something but I do need to go against anything that smacks of bullying. Postings about christianity just for the fun of it is one example of that. Go contrary to positions that have been proven wrong before is another of those. Don't let a lie stand but indeed start off and end in civility :-)

Well, I don't use that horrible slang word, but any or all, maybe more, of the other reasons.

I suspect some like simply to pick a fight.

Others seem trying to push some dogma, conspiracy-fantasy or other opinion that becomes clearly weaker the more you probe it; so when cornered by awkward questions or simple facts, react as cornered animals usually do - teeth-baring, snarling, biting, clawing.

I was gonna say it's a maturity thing but then I remembered that 60y old who told me I should sin in church for sharing a bikini selfie.
