I'm not sure,
A friend's retired hubby was a leading criminologist for most of 40 years.
He says about a third of crime are done by people who are stupid, have poor impulse control and are under severe stress. Another third are people with severe childhood trauma and/or mental illnesses, often co-morbid.
The worst are the complete sociopaths; he views this last third as usually unredeemable.
The number of convicts with mental illnesses is far higher than the percentage in the wider population, close to 100%, almost all of them at higher severity.
Bullying and control addiction bolsters an unconsciously insecure self. It can be conscious, callous, purposeful, ambitious and machiavellian - all about power. It can be one of the defining traits of narcissists.
Violence is often a secondary symptom of inability to manage uncomfortable emotions. It can be:
- habitual as a way of letting off steam,
- a result of negative interpretation of others' behaviours (paranoid/critical, not fact-checked)
- an effect of alcoholism or addictions to speed or ice
- a thrill seeking behaviour for disaffected and bored youth (provoking fights with strangers)
Although most bipolars and schizophrenics are harmless, the peak manic phase of bipolar can be quite violent, as can some schizophrenic breakdowns.
Most domestic violence (80%) is committed by men with a long history of addiction to control. They generally believe in an old-fashioned model of masculinity as the head and ruler of the household. They are mostly insecure and need to b e in a relationship with someone submissive to feel a sense of power.
The roles can be reversed, i.e., female violence to males. Note that 20% is not an insignificant number. We too often talk as if the male is always the perpetrator.
Among same sex couples, some gay men control, abuse, bully and beat up their partners (not as part of a consensual BDSM dynamic. Similarly, some lesbian women abuse and are violent to their partners. And again the ratio of crime stats is that 80% of those who've committed crimes are male and 20% female. This ratio appears to be constant across most Western countries, and is not limited to class or wealth - although it's seems to be more common in situations of poverty, low education and stress.
