It’s okay to feel emotions other than happiness

Hi, just lil mental health post for something I’d like to talk about and share,
I’ve struggled with my mental health for pretty much all of my teenage years, but as I’ve been on my journey or recovery and as of more recently, where I have genuinely been in a good place I have realised some things. For one, breaking the cycle is sooo important. It’s not easy, but honestly as much as I hate the phrase “fake it until you make it” I also find it very useful. Changing up my life and getting in a healthier daily routine has completely changed my perspective on life. I no longer spend my days lying in bed feeling bad for myself (although sometimes that’s also okay).
But yeah breaking the cycle of an unhealthy lifestyle that had bad impacts on my mental health, although was difficult, was so worth the effort I have put in and although it’s hard and seems pointless at first.
The other thing i would like to talk about is that it’s okay to have bad days. I used to think that if I felt any feeling other than happiness it meant I had failed. But actually, humans are not meant to feel happiness 24/7 and we are meant to feel every emotion, which can sometimes also be dark ones. Accepting that and rather than trying to avoid sadness, instead embracing it (and crying and doing whatever u need to do to let those emotions out, unless it’s self destructive obviously) is actually healthy. This completely changed my perspective on what it’s like to be working on good mental health, so I just thought I would share and I hope this helps someone <3 I also have loads more to say about this kinda thing so will probs be doing more posts about this lol

Very well-written, Roxy. As you say, life wouldn't be life without the ups and downs. For many years I've equated it to the weather - if it's raining out, take an umbrella.

Good luck!
@ArtieKat One can instead wear wind cheater, holding umbrella during heavy rains is a taaaaask!
Isn't "Fake it until you make it" the same thing as "Real men don't cry" - then we wonder why so many men suffer from mental illness...

@HootyTheNightOwl no that’s not what the saying means, what it means is forcing yourself into good habits and positive ways even when you don’t feel like it, and eventually you start to feel better for real, I thought the same thing when I first heard the phrase but that’s completely not what I mean so pls don’t interpret it in that way <3
