Do you think there is a lot of stigma about mental health?

Do you believe we are healing and growing?

Or do you believe we are crumbling?

Or do you just not care because your life is good?

I think with depression it has many factors.
This whole online thing isnt helping at all.
Whilst i have clinical depression i know what's good for me and it is cutting out bad habits.

Dont go online so much
Engage in a real life conversation every day
Do something you enjoy
Be silly
Listen to music the silence can be deafening
Join a group
Use your phone less
Watch something interesting

I thought id be dead by now. But im here to fight another day. The power is your hands. There's many ways out its finding the one thatll get you out of the rut. i vouch for CBT and a good diet.
Take anti depressants if you have to x

A lot of people pretend to have mental health issues like it is some cool trend or because they think it excuses that bad behaviour but I don't pay them much mind.

I have had bad mental health I used to struggle with anxiety and depression for a good number of years, during that time I took many medications, had counselling, CBT etc...

I realised that there isn't a medication on this Earth or a person that could help me, the only person who could help me was me. CBT probably would have helped had I listened but when you are in a dark place it is hard to believe that you'll ever find a way out of it so you ignore other people.

After years of desperately trying to figure out my internal issues the answer was not complicated but difficult to carry out (I am still doing it now).. how you think impacts your emotions and your behaviours but the trouble is staying present in your mind is draining and necessary. You need to catch the unhealthy thoughts in their tracks and change them but it has to be something you can believe. All the affirmations in the World won't help if they have no meaning or aren't relevant.

Much like facing a fear it has to be dealt with in the moment that those unhealthy thoughts, feelings and undesirable responses to a situation need to be addressed when they are present.
@Misanthropic I’m so confused why people would pretend 😆 Yes someone mentioned criminals, but otherwise how is pretending beneficial? And who says they’re pretending? But I haven’t watched TV in almost a decade.

I don’t tell people I struggle because they judge the shit out of you and don’t care. I learned awhile ago this is all on me. However my son is struggling. He’s 8 and having big feelings of worthlessness, which I’m not ready to counsel. I’m still working on my own. So I’m trying to reach out for him (we have no family or friends) for therapyand I’m in shock how little concern is for my son, and is instead focused on insurance and money. They will turn him away if I cannot pay. How will that effect his self worth?

I agree the power is within us, we have no one, I do it all for my son and I. But if as a country or community we could stop shaming each other, and start acknowledging each other’s pain, that would be the greatest help.

That is an unrealistic expectation to have of people.

I guess they pretend for attention, it is usually youtubers. I don't know you or your son so personally I can't tell you specifically how to help but if he has low self worth maybe some encouragement, tasks that give a sense of ability etc. Activities that are easy and fun whilst being useful so that he feels a bit better about himself?

I think there is a lot less stigma towards it compared to years back.
Still a fair bit of stigma and of course you have those young people who think having a mental illness is cool and they pretend to have a illness, or those who fake mental illnesses to capitalize from it.
Those people I feel are far worse than any stigma mental illnesses get these days
@Torsten That’s a whole separate slice of crazy.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@BrokenAbyss it is indeed
I feel like I can see improvements with my friends and even with some coworkers. However there is still a long way to go in terms of feeling confident to be open about MH if you want a leadership position.
Some days I feel we are healing…
Others crumbling.
I think we are on the cusp here and we have a chance to do better

Most definitely still a lot of stigma. Not so much in people talking about it, but in the way people react to it.
@Whodunnit I find it interesting. Like the evolution of it. A few generations ago they hardly acknowledged it. Like my Mom never got help, nor her Mom, and I remember my mom being embarrassed about taking antidepressants. She didn’t tell me for years.

I was hoping to see the stigma fade away because that’s the only issue. We all have these feelings but most will not acknowledge them.

I believe there is a shit ton of misdiagnosis and labeling of normal human behavior
@SW-User Truth. I kinda feel we’re all on the spectrum but somehow certain aspects are more acceptable than others.

I also believe boredom plays a big part. Not that we aren’t unique and interesting with our quirks, but that the expectation is to conform. When you can’t, you start to break away and struggle because people treat you like something is wrong. You feel that way about yourself long enough and it gets really confusing.

I had just read in a book written by several long ago, prominent Native Americans, that they didn’t believe they had these issues because they worked with the land. They lived a natural life of wonder. But now, it’s like we aren’t even human. If I could get my hands dirty and be part of a community I know I’d feel more alive.
I think we are gradually improving but it’s small comfort to those who are suffering
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
I have done all my talking, searching. healing and growing, I will never stop learning. I just like helping others where I can, we all need to listen yo everyone we come across in life because they might have something you can use to help you on your journey.
@Justenjoyit and beard shaving…

Still alot of situational stigma. Better than long time ago.
Too much fake mental illness as well from snowflake people.
@REMsleep how do you fake mental illness though. I guess I’m out of the know on this one…
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@BrokenAbyss ummmmmm faking mental illness is very common. Criminals do it all of the time in preparation for trials.
What I mean is that in today's society many people choose not to have discipline and not to grow in maturity and they prefer to claim that they have some particular mental illness which limits their ability to be a functional person.
@REMsleep oh another member mentioned them capitalizing from it and I wasn’t sure there was a new trend.

I’m aware criminals used the tactic, but for me I’ve always been cautious of how I could get in trouble if I’m not careful.

No need for condescending responses I’m learning.

Thank you.

I think there is less stigma about it but there definitely is a lot and it seems to be political based too.
@iamonfire696 yes! I know I sound crazy but I truly believe our government is trying to break our spirits
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@BrokenAbyss I don’t doubt that. I am not American but people with Republican views shock me because they are happy to go along with things that will be bad for them and serve the elite.
@iamonfire696 I just don’t understand.

@SW-User Are you in the US? Because I wonder if it varies country to country.
