What do you think of doctors preferences for SSRI anti depressant type medication over one that act quickly such as benzodiazepine type ones?

Do you think the SSRI ones are better? for anxiety? and depression? ocd?

SSRI’s work great for OCD. They really haven’t done much for my mood. They do help somewhat with anxiety but benzodiazepines work really for sudden panic attacks and breakthrough anxiety. I would say if you have chronic anxiety an antidepressant would be needed

@rokrchik1211 For some people it's a combination of both. Benzodiazepine and SSRI. I get why some doctors are reluctant to prescribe the fast acting ones, as some people abuse them. Whereas the SSRI ones take weeks to even work fully.

@rokrchik1211 That's good that you found one to work for your OCD

@shanec yes SSRI’s take about 6-8 weeks to get the full effect. I know that I was started on antidepressants first and then later on given a prescription for a fast acting benzo as needed for breakthrough anxiety.

@rokrchik1211 I've been on anxiety medication for years. Tried Lexapro years ago an SSRI, took weeks to work is the only cricitism I'd have of it. Sometimes ya just need something faster. Depends on the person

@shanec that is true and sometimes doctors prescribe benzos while a person is being started on an antidepressant, then taken off of them after the antidepressant has had time to become fully effective

@rokrchik1211 Yep, true. For some though like me with chronic anxiety issues, they leave the person on benzos. I have a few anxiety disorders. I've contemplated going back on an SSRI but not sure. I'm checking out other types of medication too. Sometimes a good therapist and a fast acting medication helps compliment the therapy.

@shanec I also have chronic anxiety and take both SSRI’s and benzos. If Lexapro worked for you in the past, it would be worth trying it again if you are still having bad anxiety. There are also other types of antidepressants available now too like SNRI’s that may help you as well. I hope you find something that works for you. Uncontrolled anxiety is terrible.

@rokrchik1211 Yep, It was a good few years ago I tried it. I'd be more interested in finding a new one to take. I'm also on a very low dosage of the benzo I take. The lowest one. Reluctant to go up the dosage, as the higher up you go, the less easy they are to come off. I started on anxiety medication in 2011. Yes, anxiety can be awful. I have a few anxiety disorders. Some are worse than others. I've tried lots of self help books but some of them aren't much good and not the same as getting feedback from a person.The only therapy I've tried is CBT

@rokrchik1211 Thanks for your reply

@shanec a combo of therapy and medication usually works better than one or the other

@rokrchik1211 Yep, it's finding that therapist that is the good one though. I've only ever tried CBT. It seemed a practical type of therapy
