With no religious overtones implied, there's a saying: The Devil's greatest trick was convincing man he didn't exist.
I think that's close but not quite it. I think his greatest trick is playing our deepest fears against ourselves. You get a thought of insecurity in your head and his work is complete; you'll do the heavy lifting for him.
You can decide to educated yourself as to identifying the ruse when it happens and throwing it back. You feel this way until you make a conscious choice to change it. Unsolicited advice? Go volunteer; not because you'll see "less fortunate" folk but because doing to work creates good feelings. Good luck.
