Testicular Torsion Awareness
Here's an important thing. I only learnt about this in the last few days. Have you heard of a thing called Testicular Torsion? Men you should be aware of it, ladies you should for good of your male partners or if you have male children/siblings etc.
What is it? From google ....
Testicular torsion is a medical emergency that happens when a testicle twists and cuts off its own blood supply.
Signs and Symptoms
• Sudden, severe pain in one testicle
• Swelling or redness of the scrotum
• Stomach (abdominal) pain, nausea, or vomiting
• A testicle sitting higher than normal or at an unusual angle
Why It Is an Emergency?
Without blood flow, the testicle can suffer permanent damage or die within hours.
• Within 6 hours: Highest chance of saving the testicle.
• After 12 hours: Risk of permanent damage rises greatly.
• After 24 hours: The testicle usually cannot be saved and may need removal.
Yes read that last bit again. "The testicle usually cannot be saved and may need removal."
I met someone who suffered exactly that. As a teenager he played a game of football and in the evening had a pain in his groin. He later that night felt sick. Being a teenager he didn't want to go to his mother and say "My bollock is really hurting" so assumed it would sort itself out. Obviously, he thought, just some strain from the game.
Finally on the second evening he told his mum. She gave him painkillers but in the night he woke her up again saying it's getting worse not better. Off to the hospital and the bad news that he needed an emergency operation but during that they couldn't save the testicle in question and had to remove it.
So he is now monotesticular. The good news is that the other bollock fronted up to the challenge and has grown larger than normal and his testosterone levels are more than adequate and his sexual performance is no problem and he has had sperm counts and fertility tests done and there's no obvious reason why he can't father children if he desires to.
But I'd never heard of this and therefore didn't know how important it is to get urgent treatment. If he'd gone to A&E on the first night it may all have been well and the testicle saved.
Here ends Katy's important sexual health announcement. Don't be shy guys if your bollock is suddenly painful and swollen get medical help asap.
