One of my favorite mathematicians is Blaise Pascal. He worked with triangles and pressure and created a computationial Tax machine machine. So before 1640.

@swirlie He was a brilliant mathematician. However... look at the picture

@Lisa82
What am I suppose to be looking for in the picture?

@swirlie an Invention by Blase Pascal. The picture also has a write up as what it is...

What Pascal invented there was the first 'adding machine', but it cannot double as a 'calculator'. This is because it only adds and subtracts numbers, but it could not multiply or divide numbers.

The write up states that it's a calculator, but really, it just adds and subtracts.

It was a great invention for its time and it was fairly accurate most of the time, but apparently was not totally accurate all of the time.

@swirlie Okay... I don't know what your issue with this is.... you said he wasn't an inventor. I said he was... here is something he invented. Now you are hung up on what Google called his invention. Please for the love of God please stop and don't reply.

I never said he wasn't an inventor! Those are YOUR words, not mine.

I said that what Pascal invented was an adding machine, not a calculator.

Your picture says that he invented the first mechanical calculator which is a false claim. This is because Pascal's invention only added and subtracted numbers but could not multiply or divide. That has nothing to do with Google, but has everything to do with the false fact your picture is otherwise claiming for itself.

In addition to that, Pascal's invention had 5 brass gears, not 4 as depicted in your photo.
