Did you know in the 1700s astronomers used horizontal parallax to determine accurately the distance between the Sun and the Earth by using Venus traveling across the Sun.

Thanks for posting. I remember coming across this once somewhere. Weren't they only off by a few percentage points?

(please don't show me the geometry and math. It'll only make my head hurt)
I would have figured the different types of eclipses would have been the way. I do know parallax is how they figured the distances to nearby stars.

@Oneofthestormboys The thing that always amazed me was people discovering elements that are not visible like all the gases

@Lisa82 And compared to nitrogen and oxygen (and a bit of CO2) there so very little of them in our atmosphere too… I think combined it’s about 1%…
I did not know that but that’s mighty impressive
