Errr, well, probably just arithmetic rather than maths, but why are you surprised or amused it does?

@ArishMell because its something you don't think about, but how does the machine read the barcode at any angle!
it's cause it calculates, because at every angle the comparison in space remains the same!

Yes - one of those things now so everyday we have come to take them for granted even if not knowing how they work!

I have noticed the reader sometimes struggles, usually where the code is on a very irregular surface such as a plastic bag around vegetables.

@ArishMell indeed! because that messes with the lines and then it can't calculate! we learned this in math where depending on the angel if 2 distances stay the same the comparison is the same! like 1/4 and 1/3 at an angle would be 2/8 and 2/6. so its the same, then you do this over many lines and it will know the sequence of 1/4 1/9 1/2 1/6 means this product or a number to the product!
