Is math intrisic to physics or imposed

Is there a real relationship between certain things like with E=mc^2 which connects energy and mass. Or the inverse square law for gravity. Can we draw a mathematical formula between any two things if we want? Is it purely coincidence?

Mathematics describes the Laws of Physics so is intrinsic, and we can only describe them mathematically if they form a regular pattern.

What we "call" any number is a matter of linguistics, but the patterns and relationships still hold.
