Exercising a horse on the lunge

Exercising a horse on the lunge involves working the horse in a circle around you using a long line, whip, and voice commands to build fitness, suppleness, and obedience without a rider's weight.

Essential Equipment

• For the horse: A lunge line, a lunge whip, a bridle with a bit, a lunge cavesson, a roller (optional), and protective leg boots or bandages.
• For the handler: A riding hat, gloves, and sturdy boots.

Basic Position and Triangle

• The Lunge Triangle: Your position forms a triangle shape—the horse is the base, and you stand at the apex with the lunge line and whip forming the two sides.
• Handler Position: Stand near the position of the horse's girth. Move with the horse on a small circle rather than standing completely still in one spot.
• Line Management: Fold extra line neatly in loops held well above your knee to prevent tripping; never let the line drag on the ground.

Structure of a Lunging Session (15–20 Minutes)

• 0–5 Minutes (Warm-Up): Walk and trot on both reins in a free, active frame without training aids attached.
• 5–10 Minutes (Working Phase): Introduce trot or canter work, encouraging a longer, lower frame and rhythm.
• 10–15 Minutes (Advanced Work): Add circle-spirals (spiraling in and out), gait transitions, and ground poles to build engagement and core strength.
• 15–20 Minutes (Cool-Down): Remove extra training aids and finish with a stretchy trot and walk until the horse's heart rate settles.
