A treat for you, because a unique Tasmania aminal (sic) features in this post. Otherwise known as the Pouch Weasel.
Tasmanian Pademelons (Padimelon) used to exist on mainland Australia but because of hunters after their fur, they became extinct on the mainland and are now only found in Tasmania and the islands of the Bass Strait. They are a small marsupial with a body length of 60cm, 2 feet, and a tail length of 50cm, 20". Light weight at 7 - 10kg. They live in rainforests, wet eucalypt forests, tea-tree scrub and damp, well vegetated open woodland.
They live alone and are nocturnal. Pademelons spend a lot of the day hidden away in thick, dense vegetation in rainforests. They often create small, hidden depressions or nests in the ground and grass for sleeping. When resting, they typically sit on the base of their tail and lean forward. Their diet consists mostly of grass and leaves. They breed all year round, though only have 1 young per year.
They have numerous predators, mainly the Tasmanian Devil, Quolls and Wedge Tailed Eagles and despite of these predators Pademelon numbers are high and every year, a certain number are culled to keep the population sustainable. Quoll
