What is the best costume you have ever worn on Halloween?
Are you someone who loves Halloween? Do you look forward to it every fall? Or would you rather skip the holiday?
In the illustrated article “The Spirit of Halloween” by Julia Rothman and Shaina Feinberg, several shoppers shared their experiences of going to Spirit Halloween, a costume superstore that pops up in empty buildings across the United States every October:
Zell Rivera, a 19-year-old digital artist, said: “When I was younger and Spirit first opened up, it was automatically my favorite store. I’ll probably come back two or three more times this month.”
Zula Brocero, a 32-year-old waitress, said: “Usually, we get two costumes a year. We celebrate the whole month. It’s bigger than Christmas for us.”
Kevin Ley, a 49-year-old creative director, said: “We’re shopping for a mask for our child. He’s hoping to get a chain saw, but that’s probably not going to happen.”
“I got costumes for me, wigs, makeup, a costume for my daughter. I’ll probably spend $300. With the makeup, I either paint my whole face or I add prosthetics. I watch tutorials on TikTok. Because Spirit Halloween is a pop-up, I have to make sure I have all of my stuff until it pops up again next year.” — Nicole Bates, 27, security guard
