I'll never forget you.

Do you think that is ever true or just something that is said to soften the blow?

At the time said it cannot be with anything other than intent and sentiment. I mean, it could be argued that we never forget anyone who we spend a lot of time with but that doesn't mean that we'll want to remember them or will actively think of them and that's the thing. We simply can't say how meaningful someone is likely to be to us after a long time apart except where that person is a cherished family member. I've felt a lot about people who I honestly don't think about anymore. Yet there is one person who I was very sure I'd never forget and never have and likely never will.
