For a very brief moment i thought i might be able to have feelings for him again. But he reminded me that's it's just impossible.

"You thought you might be able" would imply they had left, which would mean maybe they weren't that strong and so it was right they left.
If you have love for someone so strong generally it will never leave..it may dull if they are not on the scene but would flood back when in front of you.
