How do you write a short story?

I have to write a 4-6 page story for class this week and have bo idea how I’ll do it. The shortest story I’ve ever written has been 30 pages and I have no idea how to write something so short!

Find some very short stories and see how other authors do it. Google's AI suggests these authors.

Lydia Davis is highly regarded, with some critics placing her above even the Nobel laureate Alice Munro for her mastery of very short fiction.

George Saunders is a contemporary master known for poignant, satirical stories that often run only a few pages.

Jorge Luis Borges wrote philosophical, labyrinthine stories, many just a few pages long, that are as deep as much longer works.

Ernest Hemingway was a master of terse, classic prose and is known for several short, impactful stories, such as "Hills Like White Elephants" and "Cat in the Rain," which showcase subtext and economy of language.

Anton Chekhov is often considered the master of the short story, writing hundreds of "slice-of-life" tales that get at deeper truths without relying on complex plots.

O. Henry wrote many classic, concise stories, often with twist endings, such as "The Gift of the Magi," which is ingrained in popular culture.

Ted Chiang is a celebrated science fiction author whose stories, like "The Great Silence" and "What's Expected of Us," are often short yet profound.
