It might be possible that you thought you had turned it off, but the knob had not completely turned and thus, it moved back into place. I actually have had that experience before, and it was not a me issue, but, a hardware issue, and one that's since been fixed (I have an electric coil range so this kind of issue is even more problematic but it definitely is more noticeable).
Not to say that isn't what happened in your case, but it's a possibility. Still though, life lately, has been a "shitload of fuck" (AVGN quote).
