While it is perhaps a rather common idea, it looks like the notion that this old nursery rhyme was written about the plague in Europe is probably inaccurate. Wikipedia states that "Urban legend says the song originally described the plague, specifically the Great Plague of London, or the Black Death, but folklorists reject this idea."

@whatevernext: The American version is ashes. There are a few slightly different versions.

I should have thought "ashes" an obvious mondegreen.
After all, sneezing due to illness then falling down dead makes sense. "Ashes" has no meaning I can discern!
