Not easy to write a book

I have nothing but respect for people who write books. I have tried on three occasions to create a novel, start well, but run out of words after about 50 pages.
When I read the awesome works of Dickens, Scott, RLS or any of the other classic authors, I am always impressed by their cunning way with words.
Just an observation!

I think the only thing harder than writing a book is getting one published.
Whodunnit · M
@REMsleep I might have to buy that dating book myself, lol
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Whodunnit Make more money by writting them 🤣
Whodunnit · M
@REMsleep If I knew enough to write a book I'd not have spent most of my life single, lol

I love books - I especially love to write them. For me it is very easy to write books (I´ve written several books in the past) because it´s like I am writing automatically when I write words down on a paper.

And when I don´t have the possibility to write (like in the last years) it is like a punishment for me. 😔

@Loretta78 Fair enough. I will not ask for the book titles, then.
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
@LizOwen Even If you would ask it wouldn‘t help you because I am writing all my books not in English but in my mother language. 🙂
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Loretta78 OK - no problem!

i have the number of words down about 150K for a Novel. I stopped in the middle of my 2nd edit because i wasn’t satisfied or just felt totally unmotivated…hard to explain.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Pfuzylogic Put the story down first, then edit, edit, edit?
Pfuzylogic · M
@LizOwen Stephen King doesn’t do it that way. It does allow generation of fresh spontaneous ideas. Downside is it can take forever! 😅
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Pfuzylogic I suspect every author has their own way of working
I aim to write a book someday .. but I'm waiting for a a storyline to converge in my mind first.. because for now i just have a thousand scattered thoughts
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@SStarfish now 'all' you have to do is join the thoughts in a cohesive manner. . .
Yeah 😅@LizOwen

John Grisham advises writing about 500 words a day then in a year you have a book! But keep it as a hobby. The chances of a best seller are minimal.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@AbbeyP It's the sense of achievement that matters, rather than any financial reward.
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
@AbbeyP I agree fully.
gdon39 · 46-50, M
Keep trying but perhaps a novela to start. I’ve been keeping notes and records for years hoping to get started with a book but it is so daunting to start
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@gdon39 Thank you. A novella could be a good idea!
What type of book do you have in mind?
Try writing short stories and compile them all into an anthology.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Nexus It's worth trying! My words dry up after a while.
@LizOwen That happens a lot of writers, but short stories can be very rewarding and you might find them easy to complete. SOme short stories are only 10 pages long
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Nexus I can manage 10 pages- I think! thank you for the encouragement. :-)

Yes I read how Jack London would write I believe he would put out a thousand words a day. I read a few of his novels but been so long ago I can't remember much now.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I keep telling myself I have to finish my horror novel one day. It's about 3/4 done, but I haven't worked on it in SOOO long. :(
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@ChipmunkErnie Three quarters done is two quarters more than I ever achieved!
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
They also wrote them in a time before Spell Check and Grammarly. Which is even more impressive.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Thevy29 And before computers or even typewriters!
i wrote a great thick book. for myself. now i have something to read.
ArtieKat · M
I totally agree, Liz
REMsleep · 41-45, F
I have also tried multiple times to write a book. I even have the story in my head from start to finish. I know how it will end and how I want to get there but its so much work and research and the devil is in the details. Once I wrote the story on my phone for more than one year when ever I was bored or waiting I'd add to it. I got about 2 chapters and then the word app crashed and I lost it all. Lol
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@REMsleep Could you start again?
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@LizOwen Yes, I work 3 jobs so thats part of it but I want to finish that book one day even if just to show myself that it can be done and even if I'm the only one that reads it.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@REMsleep Well done, you! I am the last person to give advice, but if you are determined, then keep writing!
