Hello all you wonderful people of SW! Is there anyone in here that fancies themselves an amateur editor?

I have an adult themed novelette that I am considering trying to self publish. Just wondering if anyone on here might want to get more experience editing and might offer up their services for free. I figured it’s worth a shot 🤷‍♀ lol

No. I've edited professionally for 38-39 years, everything from Requests for Proposals of Fortune 100 companies to How to Homeschool books and their websites.

Ask to see a couple of roughs and the (proven) edited pieces before you enlist even an amateur. Good luck.

@Starchild1983 No problem. Some will try to enlist the aid of the best "editor" on the basis of technical merit . Some will try to enlist an editor on the basis of "friendliness- easy to chat with- nicest", etc. It's a tough call for anyone, especially if it their first time writing a manuscript. I would lean 55/45, technical over sweetness, but again, that's just my opinion. The editor has a job to do, and sometimes they DO have to be a bit strict. Hopefully, they will be strict in a kind and helpful way. My dad once told me, "Before you complain about (how to do) something you think is wrong, think of at least two different ways that it could be fixed and done well". A good editor should be able to provide a couple of different - even divergent- edits (for the logic and plan of the workpiece), and a rational argument for each. (Grammar is another story and stands on its own merits). I hope this helps.

@Massageman it does actually. Thank you for the thorough response.

@Starchild1983 No problem. Good luck on your project.

If you find someone interested, suggest having them work on a short sample to get an idea if they have some skill and if they are doing what you need. Like any other trade, someone who doesn't suit you, or is just not competent, can really mess things up. Good luck.

@Rambler thank you for the advice!

have you tried a few beta readers first so you can touch up things that you may have overlooked before actually getting an editor? May save you time and money.

Let us know when you publish so we can show our support

I am the last person you want messing with your hard work. But I do hope someone comes to help you
Starchild1983 · 41-45, F
@Degbeme thank you 🤗
I'll be glad to help anyway I can with the editing.
@Starchild1983 I've edited a couple of research papers and a couple of writings (one was in the category of erotica) but nothing along the lines of a book.
Starchild1983 · 41-45, F
@onrealityofdreams well it’s not a book, it’s 15,261 words I think they consider that a novelette. Not quite a novella but a bit longer than a short story
@Starchild1983 Like I said if I can help you with it, I will.

I have a side-gig where I write as a technical Journalist for a private ocean yachting magazine exclusively published for a female audience. I edit my own work which is a prerequisite for me being a contributing Writer to that monthly magazine.

If you're going to be a successful Writer of novels, you must have full control of your own work, otherwise a professional Editor can destroy your reputation as a Writer in very short order if they don't really understand what you're writing about. If you're going to be a Writer, you must also learn how to self-edit your own work.

@Starchild1983
That would tell me that you are not a creative, descriptive Writer. Is that how you too would describe your writing style to be?
Starchild1983 · 41-45, F
@swirlie 🙄

@Starchild1983
Okay, you clearly don't understand the difference between being a creative, descriptive writer and a non-creative, descriptive writer.

For you to just roll your eyes without even asking what I'm talking about would suggest to me that you really shouldn't be editing your own work after all.

If you’re writing a novel and showing it to people write on it that it is copyrighted so that they cannot publish it and take it from you.
Starchild1983 · 41-45, F
@Muthafukajones I did take that into consideration, thank you
ShenaniganFoodie · 36-40, M
Is this your novel about Sexual Positions again
Starchild1983 · 41-45, F
@ShenaniganFoodie nah, I’ve got that one mastered
