Just another example of how inconsistent the English language is. It’s a result of the base Germanic root influenced by Latin, French, and around a thousand other languages. Imagine having to learn this as an adult.

Apparently it was at some point spelled "quire". The spelling "choir" was influenced by "chorus" and the French word "choeur" but it's not the original spelling of that word.
