Something i heard on CBC radio a while back that I have found really helpful is that historically, people just assumed that you had a first sleep and a second sleep during the night. Sometimes people would take advantage of the awake interval at night to do religious practice. But in any case they wouldn't worry about being awake but still needing more sleep. That was just a regular pattern of life, and then back to sleep you would go. This historical knowledge has actually helped me to get back to sleep after nighttime wake-ups.

@ThePatientAnarchist this is exactly how I sleep - middle of the night I wake up and do the dishes or handle some light chores around the house, and then go back to sleep; so much better to lean into it than lay awake waiting to fall back asleep
