It feels like the equality some people seek is equality of misery

And the most important freedom is the freedom to feel superior to others. Perhaps this post feeds into the latter. But the point remains that so much of society seems to be built on getting ahead by tearing others down. This is why quality of life is decaying generation over generation. Our personal advancement is becoming destructive to our collective wellbeing.

Our communities are falling apart. Bullies are winning. Being fake is desirable...

I agree, but I do have a spark of hope for the future that we learn from our mistakes.

@MarbleMarvel In the long term, things do tend to get better. We have to keep striving for that and not take it for granted, but history favors our attempts.

Progress is rarely a straight line though. After the US Gilded Age led to the Great Depression we managed to get the New Deal. After the Nazis led to the German occupation, the restoration of Germany led to a wonderous revival.

Great things can come after a dark period. It's just going to have to suck to live through the dark period first.
@ViciDraco I see cycles. We keep repeating these monumental eff ups, then improve until we become complacent again. Our culture/society enables it.
