NOTHING should be out in the open except decorative items. If you have so many non decorative items that they can't be stored in your existing space, then donate them.
If you are saving things because they belonged to a relative and have sentimental value, but you really don't like the items for yourself, then take a photograph of the item, save it to your computer, and donate it.
